More information : Vessel was seen from the cliff top about 6 miles of Bude, apparently in distress. At 6.30pm the same day she had drifted to within only 2 or 3 miles off Dazzard (sic) Cliff, was labouring, and losing ground on every tack, and then appeared to founder. The following day a small boat was sighted a quarter mile offshore with no one aboard, which later drifted ashore and was found to have the name AMPULLA painted on it. A quantity of rigging and masts was also seen floating some distance off, which appeared to be still attached to a sunken vessel.
`Vessel lost - During a heavy squall in the NW gale that prevailed at Bude on Monday last, a large brig apparently light (which had got embayed) was seen during the afternoon standing on and off, endeavouring to weather the land, but in the squall disappeared, and on the following morning parts of a vessel were washed ashore in Widemouth Bay. There is no account as yet of any of the crew.' (2)
