More information : (SO 51534019) Site of (NAT) St Guthlac's Priory (NR) (Benedictine) (NAT). (1)
The Benedictine Priory of St Guthlac (or SS Peter, Paul and Guthlac) was founded 1107-22. The monastic buildings circa 1143, occupied a considerable area outside the city wall between Bath Street and Commerical Road. The main gateway opened into Commercial Road somewhere below the Kerry Arms. (2-3)
A small rescue excavation in the grounds of Hereford County Hospital revealed the burial area of St Guthlac's Priory. Two distinct levels of burials were found, some being in stone coffins. The eastern limit of the burial ground was established and foundations which sealed the burials, were confirmed as being that of the workhouse which later occupied the site. (4)

Excavations in 1984-5 during the extansion of the County Hospital located 38 burials from the monastic cemetery, the burials being aligned NW-SE. Further excavations in 1986 on the bus station site and in 187 on the cinema site found no notable features associated with the monastery. (6) |
