Summary : The Inner Curtain Wall lies around the White Tower forming the Inner Ward at the Tower of London. It was begun in c.1170 but most of it, including eight wall towers, was built by Henry III from 1238 onwards. The building of this towered curtain wall transformed the defences. The lower courses of the wall are still intact and are listed. The gunports, loops and crenellation were reqorked in the 19th century. The west side of the curtain wall has a fine continuous line of embrasures built in 13th century brick. |
