Summary : There is documentary evidence for a small pele tower, situated within the shrunken medieval village of Branxton. The tower is said to have been damaged by the Scots in 1496 and repaired by 1541. It was razed before 1596. However, no evidence remains, either on or below the ground, for this building. |
More information : The tower at Branxton is first mentioned as extant in 1522. In 1541 it was stated to be newly repaired after being damaged by the Scots in 1496. (1) There are no apparent remains of a tower at Branxton. Mr.Rankin, Curator, Flodden Field, Branxton, was unable to offer any siting evidence. (2)
The tower was razed before 1596. Listed by King and Dodds. (3,4) |
