Summary : Pleasure grounds to Gibside Hall which were laid out between 1729 and 1760 for George Bowes by William Joyce with advice from Stephen Switzer who had prepared designs in 1731 and 1732. The wooded areas are situated to the northeast and east with open areas to the south and southwest. Plantations and the serpentine drive were laid out in 1729-30. A fountain was set up in 1742 and a terrace walk was laid out in 1746-49. |
More information : Eighteenth century walled kitchen garden, landscape park and woodland for Gibside country house. The wooded areas of the park are to the northeast and east with open parkland to the south and southwest. In 1729-30 plantations and the serpentine drive were set out. There is also a network of paths and avenues linking buildings within the park. In 1742 a fountain was set up. A terrace walk was laid out in 1746-9. The orangery has parapet urns and steps leading to lawns where there was also a fountain. (1)
