Summary : The earthwork and buried remains of a motte and bailey castle at Edvin Loach. The remains of the castle include an earthern motte mound which is circular in plan with a maximum diameter of 30 metres. Its sides rise up to 2 metres to a flat top around 22 metres in diameter. The motte is surrounded by a broad ditch from which material for its construction will have been quarried. The ditch is clearly visible around the south west quarter, where it survives to a depth of 0.4 metres and 10 metres wide. The bailey extends eastwards from the motte, forming a roughly square enclosure with a maximum width of 70 metres. The central part of the bailey is now occupied by the churchyard belonging to the Old Church of St Mary. |
