More information : (SO 48977787) Tumulus (NR). (1) Known as "Robin Hood's Butt" or "Bitt Tump"; 90ft diam and 14ft high. Excavated in 1884 when, 10ft below the top of the mound, cremated human bones were found with a small piece of bronze spear or arrow-head. Original ground level was reached with no further finds. (2) A round barrow, situated upon a local rise of ground, diameter 30.0m, height 4.7m. No traces of a ditch. Under turf and in good condition. Published 1:2500 survey revised. The names by which this barrow has been known do not appear to be in use today. (3) A cinerary urn, in Ludlow Museum; said to have come from this barrow, probably came from the barrow situated at SO 49567735. (See SO 47 NE 11). SO 4896 7787. Robin Hood's Butt: a bowl barrow 190m north of Ludlow golf course club house. Scheduled (RSM). The surrounding ditch has become infilled but survives as a buried feature some 3m wide. (6)
The earthwork remains of the Bronze Age round barrow described by the previous authorities were seen centred at SO 4897 7788 and mapped from aerial photographs. (7) |
