SHOBDON PRIORY

DESCRIPTION + /

Priory for Augustinian Canons was founded at Shobdon by Oliver de Merlemond between 1131 and 1148. It originally consisted of a prior and two canons from St Victor at Paris. After a number of moves, including a return to Shobdon, they finally settled at Wigmore in 1179. The church constructed about 1141, was pulled down in 1753 except for the tower, chancel-arch and the north and south doors. These were re-erected to form a feature in the Shobdon Park.
