More information : (SO 401627) Shobdon Court on site of (NAT) Priory (NR)(Augustinian) (NAT) St John's Ch (NAT). (1)
A Priory for Augustinian Canons was founded at Shobdon by Oliver de Merlemond between 1131 and 1148. The original convent consisted of a prior and two canons from St Victor at Paris. After a number of moves, including a return to Shobdon, they finally settled at Wigmore in 1179 (SO 47 SW 9). The old church at Shobdon, built about 1141, was pulled down in 1753 except for the 13th/14th century tower, the chancel-arch and N and S doorways. These were re-erected to form a feature in the park 1/4 mile to the N. The Norman arches still stand but the ornament has been badly weathered.
Shobdon Court an early 18th century building, was demolished in 1933. (There is no suggestion that it was on the site of the Priory). (2-4)
"A large space in the midst of a grove of trees, and an ancient yew tree in one corner, point at the site of the Priory". (5)
The Norman arches are still in the park to the north of the church which is in normal use. Nothing is known about the site of the Priory. (a) (6) |
