Summary : Alleged Bronze Age round barrow, Grinsell's Avebury 48a, observed as a cropmark. Re-examination of the aerial photography used by Grinsell, suggests he was mistaken in his interpretation of this being a barrow, as there is no cropmark at the point given. |
More information : Documentary sources relating to barrows in the vicinity of Windmill Hill were examined as part of the RCHME project on Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic. Grinsell (1a) recorded a cropmark feature described as a probable ploughed-out barrow at SU 09007108, and designated it Avebury 48a. For some reason, the Ordnance Survey did not record it. For a full discussion of the barrows in the Windmill Hill area, see the archive report. (1)
Grinsell's interpretation of their being a Bronze Age barrow at SU 0900 7108 was based on an aerial photograph (2). Re-examination of this aerial photograph and all other available photography failed to detect a cropmark at the grid reference given. Hence the reason for the Ordnance Survey not recording it. |
