More information : TF028070. A ringwork comprising an inner palisaded ditch and two concentric ditches was discovered around the castle mound at Stamford. The ditches cut a number of pits, some of which were clearly contemporary with the life of the ringwork. Dating evidence obtained from pottery suggests that the work was in use some time after 850, and although part of the middle ditch was sealed in Alfred's reign (an Alfredian coin was found in the fill), the ringwork probably remained in use for a few decades. The total area enclosed is circa 2 acres suggesting that it may have been a noble's residence or possibly an encampment. (1,2) |
