More information : ST061432. Celtic monastery and minster at Watchet sited to the burh at Dawe's Castle.
The present church of St Decuman's was probably Celtic in origin and probably became a minster. It had a dean and dependent chapel until the middle of the C12th. The site was abandoned in favour of another on the opposite side of the River Washford due to coastal erosion. The present church has no features dateable to a period earlier than the C13th. A field on the North-East side of Dawe's Castle is called Old Minster and has yielded inhumations (in the C19th) suggesting that the site may still survive. (1,2) |
