Monument Number 107672

Hob Uid: 107672
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Kilpeck
Grid Ref : SO4408029430
Summary : 'U' mound. ?Medieval or modern.
More information : (SO 4408 2943) Mound (NR). (1)

Mound - roughly round, about 26 yds in diameter at the base and
6 ft high. (2)

The mound averaging 18.0m diameter and up to 2.0m high is
unlikely to be a motte as it lies within what was formerly an
aritificial pond or lake formed by damming Morlas Brook. The
east portion of this dam remains at SO 4407 2950 and the mound
is probably an artificial island.
Published Survey 25" correct. (3)

During 1973-4 the mound was levelled by bull-dozing,
preparatory to ploughing and conversion of the site to pasture.
The site and spoil heap were examined but nothing was found and
would seem to have been "a defensive construction possibly of 11th
- 12th century date". (4)
