Summary : The earthwork and buried remains of a medieval motte. The remains include an earthern mound of circular form, circa 45m at the base, rising circa 2m to a flat top of circa 30m diameter. Excavation of the site in 1906 failed to produce any evidence of structure or occupation at the site, and a resistivity survey has also failed to produce any more successful results. Scheduled. |
More information : (SO 41492940) Mound (NR). (1)
Mound about 45 yds in diameter, with a flat top about 7ft above the surrounding ground. There are very faint traces of a ditch round the base. (2)
Partially excavated in August 1906 by T G Barnett, but with no definite result. It may have been a castle mound but could equally well be the site of a moated homestead. According to unsupported tradition it was a burial place after a battle at Kilpeck Castle. (3-4)
G H Jack describes it as undoubtedly sepulchral. He cites it as one of the few instances of prehistoric burials being found in Herefordshire. (5)
Marked on map of prehistoric Herefordshire as a burial of uncertain period but possibly Iron Age (6)
A mound 42.0m diameter and 2.0m high, surrounded by a ditch 10.0m wide and 0.3m deep, probably a low motte, (Its form and size alone suggest it unlikely to be a B.A. barrow) Surveyed at 1:2500. Mounds and ditches up to 0.4m high in the same field to the SW of the mound suggest a DMV although no house platforms or other identifiable features remain. (7)
