Summary : Country house, incorporating the gateway and tower of a 14th century fortified house or castle, which was enlarged circa 1500 and again during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was also extensively remodelled by Nash between 1795-1807. Further alterations took place in the 20th century. The stone-built house is irregular in plan, with the early tower at the north east angle.

House of 3 storeys, tower of 5. "The form of the earliest building on the site is not now recoverable, but in the middle of the 14th century there appears to have been a fortified enclosure to the SE of the house, of which a large gateway survives on the S side. The tower at the NW angle of the building was built perhaps late in the 14th cent". Other rubble walls and the one-storeyed outbuildings may be of the same date. Additions in c.1500, 16th cent and 17th cent. Remodelled by Nash in 1824. The top storey of the tower is modern. (2)

Visited 15.7.52 as described above. The home of the ancient family of Scudamore one of the places where Owen Glendwyr is said to have died in 1416. (3)

SO 42302590: Kentchurch Court is in good condition and outstanding in this area. Published survey 25" correct. (4)

Listed Grade 1. Open to the public. (5)

Kentchurch Court, Castle, now country house. Part of tower and a gateway survive of 14th.c structure, remainder largely rebuilt by Nash between 1795 and 1807, with further alterations in 20th.c. Listed Grade I. (6)
