More information : (SO 32419990) Stone Circle (NR).(1) Hoar Stone or Marsh Pool Circle, a stone circle surveyed in Sept 1924. Plan.(2) A circle of 38 stones of dolerite, 22.0m in diameter, with a larger stone at the centre, arranged as shown on the plan by Authy 2; see photographs. The site lies upon a gentle SE slope of reedy, damp rough pasture, not far from the N end of a former glacial lake, of which the Marsh Pool is a remnant. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (Not possible to depict all stones at this scale).(3) SO 324 999: The Hoar Stone Circle (Black Marsh) and two mounds to the North. Scheduled: Salop No.14.(4)(8)
The stone circle is half-hidden in marshy undergrowth. It is 65' in diameter, and consists of 37 upright stones and a single stone at the centre.(5)

The upstanding remains of the Bronze Age stone circle described by the previous authorities were seen centred at SO 3240 9991 and mapped from aerial photographs. The site was mapped at 1:10,000 scale as part of the RCHME: Marches Uplands Mapping Project. (9) |
