More information : (NY 3245 5910) MC 72 (GS) (1)
(NY 3242 5911) Milecastle 72, whose remains were observed by Horsley (a) was located by Bartle at Fauld Farm in 1960. From his excavations, he suggests that the milecastle corresponds closely to M/C 79 (NY 26 SW 17) which was 57-1/2ft square internally. Most of the pottery found was of the 2nd century; none could be assigned for certain to the 3rd or 4th centuries. (2)
No visible remains. (3)
The milecastle was excavated in 1977 and 1989, and the north, west and east walls, both turf and stone, were located; the east wall was found in the position where Bartle (Authority 2) had placed the north gate (4a-b). No surface trace; plotted on RCHME 1:2500 plan from the results of the 1989 excavation. Bartle (Authority 2) had not only mislocated the milecastle but had misread Horsley (Authority 2a) who was referring to Milecastle 73 (NY 35 NW 17). (4) |
