Summary : Possible site of Roman baths, indicated by structures and various finds; no surface trace. An altar dedicated to Deo Belatuca was found in the vicarage garden.
More information : (Area NY 3291 5907) During the excavation of the canal (later the railway) (Lin 91) at Burgh-by-Sands c 1819, blocks of stone blackened by smoke were dug out of the soil south east of the church (1). Fifty yards east of the church (? along the line of the canal) was found a large floor of hard cement, and a stone inscribed with a figure of Mercury. A metal pot and a coin of Faustina (4) were found 100 yards east of the church. Pieces of red earthern pipes were found in the general area. An altar dedicated to Deo Belatuca was found in the vicarage garden (5). Wilkin (5a) recorded a pot full of soot, foundations of houses, and much Roman pottery found on the flat ground about the vicarage barn (The old vicarage at NY 3290 5912). Richmond (3) places the Roman Baths in this general area. (1-5)

Possible Bath house area south-east of church; no accurate locational details are given by any of the above Authorities and there is no trace on the ground. (8)
