Nun Appleton. The priory of St Mary and St John Evangelist was founded by Eustace de Merch circa 1150 when lands were granted to the `prior' and nuns. It became one of the larger nunneries with perhaps about 30 nuns. In 1306 it is recorded as being in the order of St Benedict but this does not mean that it was not Cistercian. Dissolved in 1539. (2-3)

Nun Appleton Hall is a private residence (see SE 53 NE 5). There are no visible surviving remains of the priory. (4)
