Summary : The original Church of St Peter, Titley, probably served as a chapel of the alien priory cell, founded 1120-1 and dissolved 1391.There are few records of this cell, of the Order of Tiron which appears to have been very small. It was granted to Winchester College. The church was entirely rebuilt in 1865 to a plan of West tower, nave, North aisle, South porch, chancel and North vestry. Priory Cottage, also on the priory site, was built in late 16th century, and has no remains of the priory. |

A map of 'College Lands at Titley 1769' shows a small building in the south-west corner of the churchyard (which is shown square) adjoining Priory Wood (named as such as on present 6"). The building is shown in elevation in a character similar to the church (which has nave, chancel and western tower with spire). (4) Nothing is known locally about this Priory cell but Priory Cottage at SO33116018 is a timber framed building and may incorporate one of the buildings of the cell. There is no evidence of the building in the south-west corner of the churchyard. (5) |
