Bowl Barrow 445 Metres South West Of Lower Court

Hob Uid: 106495
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Kinsham
Grid Ref : SO3581064070
Summary : Bronze Age bowl barrow located in an arable field 445 metres south west of Lower Court. The barrow has a diameter of around 35 metres and a maximum height of 0.5 metres. A quarry ditch is likely to have surrounded the barrow. Also previously the site of a recumbent stone with cup markings which was moved to the corner of an adjacent field in 1972 and placed with the carvings on the underside. Scheduled.
More information : (SO 35816407)(2)(3) Circular mound about 4 feet high and
about 32 yards in diameter at the base. About 120 yards north east (SO 3587 6418(2)) a stone of roughly oval form, 8 1/2 feet long and 2 feet high with four circular sinkings about 3 inches in diameter on the top surface. (1-3)

SO 35816407: The mound described above looks like a barrow but its situation on the flood plain of the River Lugg makes this unlikely and it may well be natural. A similar mound is situated at SO 3606 6396 (SO 36 SE 10).

Surveyed at 1:2500.

The recumbent stone has now been moved to SO 36076405 and the cup marks are on the under side and cannot be seen. There is still a slight hollow at SO 35876418 where the stone was removed from some 6 months ago.(a) (4)

SO 3581 6407: Bronze Age bowl barrow located in an arable field 445 metres south west of Lower Court. The mound is 35 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height. Scheduled. (5)

The mound is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, including the one cited in authority 3, and has been mapped by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project. (6-7)
