More information : A Romano British Mercury Relief was found by Major D Ross in his garden at Staunton on Arrow, among stones from a rockery which was demolished in 1966. The stone carving had been placed on the rockery by a Mrs Lawson-Perry when she lived at the house, which was formerly the Vicarage. She got the stone from the stable loft, and said it was found by Preb S Cornish Watkins. (a) Preb Watkins was incumbernt of Staunton on Arrow from 1903-1931, a member of the Woolhope Club, he was its President in 1914, and is described as a collector of antiquities. Nothing is known about his collection and it is impossible to say where the Romano British Mercury Relief was originally found. (1) This relief of Mercury was found in 1967 in a rockery at Staunton House, (Vicarage on OS 6" 1963) at SO 37016012. Major Ross is of the opinion that the stone was probably found some 30-50 years ago in the vicinity of Staunton and incorporated unrecognised into the rockery. It was sold last year at Sotheby's "to be built into a private swimming pool". (2)
