Monument Number 106422

Hob Uid: 106422
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Wigmore
Grid Ref : SO3859069430
Summary : A circular mound of uncertain date and origin, surrounded by a ditch, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. Field investigators found the mound to be in bad condition. Its appearance suggests a possible Medieval motte, but was not depicted on Ordnance Survey maps until the 1976. It may be a natural feature.
More information : A mutilated mound surrounded by a ditch was
discovered on air photographs at SO38596943. (1)

The mound is circular and rises above the ditch on the north
to a height of some 1.5m and on the south to 1.0m. There are
traces of an internal bank but it is very mutilated and indistinct.
The overall diameter of the mound in 30.0m and the top has a
diameter of 22.0m.

The ditch, which is 0.8m deep, has two modern breaks on the
west, probably to drain it.

There is no evidence of a bailey.

Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)

The mound and surrounding ditch are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, including the one cited in authority 1, and have been mapped by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project. The date and origin of the mound are uncertain, and it is in bad condition. Although its appearance suggests a possible Medieval motte, the mound was not shown by the Ordnance Survey until the 1976 edition of the 1:2500 map. It may be a natural feature. (3-5)
