More information : (Area centred: SO 3610 6688) Lynchets in two fields S and SE Archer's Ford and 600 yds. S.W. of the church. The first series consists of six terraces extending for about 140 yds. on either side of a central hedge, N.W. of which there are only five terraces; their width varies from 23' to 44'. The second system, about 18 yds further W., consists of only two terraces, both about 55 ft. wide and extending for about 86 yds. Condition fairly good. Visible on air photographs (2). (1-2) Two series of lynchets are centred at SO 36006698, and at SO 35806707. They are well defined and as described. (3)
The lynchets described in authorities 1-3 are part of a larger group visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project. The earthworks have been interpreted as a Medieval or Post Medieval field system covering an area of about 14 hectares on a hillside overlooking Lingen. At SO 3597 6695 the lynchets appear to form a partial enclosure 110m x 75m. The possible enclosure is part of the field system. (4-5) |
