More information : (SO31025172) Moat (NR). (1)
Earthwork or moat forms a circular enclosure surrounded by a partly wet ditch. (2)
La More. Shown by Rees as a small fortress, fortified manor-house or castle site abandoned by the 14thc. (3)
A small, now-dry, oval-shaped homestead moat situated on level ground within an arable field. It measures overall 48.0m NW-SE by 38.0m transversely, the ditch being 7.0m to 10.0m in width and averaging 1.0m in depth. The ditch on the S side has been reduced by ploughing, otherwise the moat, at present under rough pasture with a few mature trees on the island, is in fair condition. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (4) [Lemore Mount. Evaluation of earthwork undertaken for the Victoria County History (a) noted "the faint trace of a rampart both inside and out" which precluded an interpretation of the site as a homestead moat, noting also that it is locally said to be the site of a castle; a view which has been upheld (b)]. |
