Summary : Site of Hull Castle. Henrician artillery castle of 1541 sited between two blockhouses (qv) and interconnected with them by a curtain wall. Converted to use as a magazine when absorbed into the Citadel (TA12NW2) circa 1680. Finally demolished 1863. Excavations have recovered some of the plan of the castle, and show it to have been influenced by Italianate design. The battered walls and pointed bastions are a marked development from the rounded castles at Deal and Walmer. |
