Summary : Earthwork remains of a Medieval Motte and Bailey. The motte is about 33 yards in diameter at the base, and rises some 14 feet above the level of the bailey from which it is not now separated by any ditch. The Moat was partly filled in when field investigated in 1971. Scheduled.
More information : (SO 311491) Castle Farm (NAT) Motte and Bailey (NR) Moat (NR) (1) Eardisley Castle, motte and bailey, (see plan) may have originated as the "defensive house" referred to in the Domesday Survey. The motte is about 33 yds in diameter at the base, and rises some 14ft above the level of the bailey from which it is not now separated by any ditch. The moat is still wet; along its W and SW sides is an outer bank, and still further W a stream appears to have been used to form an outer enclosure of irregular form. A second stream and bank, again to the W form a second enclosure. (2) (SO 31104910) The motte, which is heavily overgrown is unchanged but the moat is now partly filled in. Only the SW arm and part of the S arm, which are waterfilled, remain. The two streams to the west of the moat appear to be connected with the disused water mill, at SO 31134920, and are not contemporary with the motte and bailey. Published survey (25") revised. (3) The Medieval motte and bailey described above was mapped from good quality air photographs. The following features were identified:- Probable Medieval bailey, seen as earthworks. Morphological description: an interrupted, single linear feature, defined by 1 ditch with a maximum length of 90m. Centred at:-SO 3111 4909 (Morph No. MU.138.3.1) Probable Medieval motte, seen as earthworks. Morphological description: one large (15-50m), round feature.
