Summary : The remains of a series of rectilinear fishponds survive as earthworks next to the Abbot's Fish House (see Monument Record UID 194144), which supplied fish to the nearby Glastonbury Abbey. The fishponds are about 20 - 30 metres long by 5 metres wide, and survive with a series of interconnecting drains and gullies. Although the Abbot's Fish House has been dated to 1322-1335, the ponds may, however, be earlier than this since the Domesday Survey of 1086 records the presence of three fisheries and ten fishermen at Meare. |
