Stainfield Hall

Hob Uid: 1058727
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Stainfield
Grid Ref : TF1129073080
Summary : Post Medieval formal garden including a wild and kitchen garden, terrace, bowling green, ornamental pond, seen as cropmarks and earthworks.
More information : Stainfield Hall and its associated Post Medieval garden were
originally recorded in TF 17 SW 1.

Documentary research indicates the house at Stainfield was rebuilt
in 1611 with later additions in the early 18th century, and had
extensive formal gardens associated with it. After 1760 the house
fell in to disrepair and was pulled down in 1773. the remaining
parts were destroyed by fire in 1855. The present building dates
from 1856.

The Post Medieval formal gardens were surveyed on the ground by the
RCHME and mapped from good quality air photographs as part of the
LIncolnshire NMP. The earthworks have mostly been levelled and were
visible as cropmarks. The formal garden overlies a Medieval village
settlement (recorded in TF 17 SW 12) and a Benedictine nunnery
(recorded in TF 17 SW 1). The main features identified were an
ornamental terrace (TF 1129 7308) and pond (TF 1130 7319), a bowling
green (TF 1124 7310), a wild garden (TF 1132 7304) and a kitchen
garden (TF 1132 7311).
