The calculated position of Milecastle 69 (Sourmilk Bridge). (2-3)
No visible remains. (4)
"...(The Wall) crossed the stream dividing Grinsdale from Kirkandrews (Sourmilk Bridge). At this bend a greater quantity of foundation stones were seen than usual and it was conjectured there might have been a milecastle at that spot." (5a). In 1960 Bartle visited the spot and was told by the tenant of Millbeck that a great deal of stone was present when ploughing the field on the east bank of Sourmilk Bridge. The Milecastle may have stood on the point of the salient (NY 36575810) (the position favoured by Bartle), or, rather more to the West and nearer to the bridge. (5)
(NY 361 580) A map of 1746 (6a) shows a mill (at approx NY 3621 5822) on the east bank of Sourmilk Bridge, probably the mill mentioned by MacLauchlan (5a). The stones in the field to the east of Millbeck must have come from the demolished mill. Thus it would seem now that the more easterly position would be appropriate for Milecastle 69 (ie at NY 3657 5810). (6)
There is no surface evidence for the position of the milecastle. (7) |
