More information : (NY 396567) Bridge (R) (1)
One of the three major rivers crossed by the Roman Wall was the Eden, where Camden had reported the Wall crossing the river "from near the castle where, in the bed of the river, traces of it are to be seen, namely great stones". (2)
(NY 39665671) In August 1951, eighty or ninety sandstone blocks were dredged from the river bed, forty yards upstream from the OS crossing site (NY 39655675) at positions fifteen and eighty-three feet from the south bank. One stone had a centurial inscription of Vesnius Viator, suggesting a Hadrianic date for the bridge (b). Four of the stones found had splayed sides, and were presumably from cutwaters. The superstructure of the bridge was presumably of stone. (3)
