More information : (SO 24739682) Moat (NR) (1)
A rectangular defence of a mediaeval fortified house; possibly the manor house of Timberth, which was a member of Chirbury, and held of the castle of Montgomery by the tenure of castle-guard. (2)
This homestead moat has been almost completely destroyed the only surviving portions being the outer scarp, 0.8 m in height, of the NE arm and part of the partially filled NW arm. The present brick-built farmhouse is 18th or 19th century with no visible evidence of a mediaeval house. Published survey (25") revised. (3)
Noted in a list of Moated sites in Shropshire at SO247968. Manorial moated site, buildings noted (4)
This location falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project, but no trace of a moat was recorded by that survey. (5) |
