Hob Uid: 1055146
Location :
Staffordshire
East Staffordshire
Croxden
Grid Ref : SK0647039850
Summary : The buried remains of the abbey gatehouse of Croxden Abbey, constructed circa 1179 to circa 1280. Documentary evidence established that the main abbey gatehouse, originally a major stone building, was sited across the line of the present road to the north west of the monastic church. It is known to have been 'almost entire' in 1719.
More information : Previously recorded as SK 03 NE 1.11

[SK 06473985] "The principal gate of the monastery was ... that which closed the road from Alton.

Tradition places the site exactly at the western end of the little building which was later the parish church.

Garner says the remains of the gatehouse could be seen in his time adjoining the parish church.
