"The Crugyn" Newcastle, 11th-12th centuries. Listed by Hogg and King under Early Castles in Wales and the Marches. 10' in height; it was formerly thought to be a tumulus (3). (2-3)

A natural mound, the upper slopes of which have been artifically scarped to form a small motte, is situated in the valley bottom on the east bank of the River Clun at the above siting. The mound has a base diameter of 42.0m NW-SE by 35.0m transversely; the motte is about 20.0m diameter with a flat summit, 7.0m by 5.0m in diameter. The mound is 3.5m high. No traces of an associated bailey are to be found. Published 1;2500 survey revised. (5)

The site has been assessed for scheduling but been rejected. Ploughing has reduced and spread the height of this mound. It lies within an area of improved pasture. Normal planning contols should apply. (7) |
