North Ormsby

Hob Uid: 1051443
Location :
Lincolnshire
East Lindsey
North Ormsby
Grid Ref : TF2853093070
Summary : Medieval settlement (hollow way, tofts, crofts, buildings, ridge and furrow, ponds, lynchets) seen as cropmarks and earthworks.
More information : The remains of Medieval settlement were seen as earthworks and
mapped from good quality air photographs. The Medieval settlement
is adjacent to a Gilbertine priory (TF 29 SE 5) and an ornamental
moat (TF 29 SE 4) by Abbey Farm and some features could be common
to these other sites.

The remains of tofts and crofts are visible flanking an east - west
oriented hollow way, centred at TF 2853 9307. The tofts and crofts
are visible as embanked enclosures ranging in size from 15m by 15m
to 100m by 50m. The tofts to the north of the hollow way have been
ploughed and are now visible as cropmarks. In the tofts at the
east end of the settlement are the remains of two buildings visible
as rectangular enclosures, measuring 10m by 8m and 5m by 5m,
defined by low banks or earth covered walls. These are centred at
TF 2873 9315 and TF 2870 9309. Two quarries in this area may
indicate the site of grubbed out buildings. To the south of the
settlement remains is a block of ridge and furrow and the remains
of more croft or field boundaries, centred at TF 2760 9296. The
remains of lynchets are visible on the south west fringe of the
settlement, centred at TF 2836 9287. There are three lynchets
measuring on average 170m by 15m. More fragments of Medieval
settlement are visible to the west of the Priory. Fragments of
possible crofts and a large pond are centred at TF 2793 9298. The
pond could be related to the adjacent ornamental moat referred to
above. (Morph No. LI.331.1.1-20)
