More information : The remains of Medieval settlement were seen as earthworks, to the north east of Burwell village, and mapped from good quality air photographs. Most of the remains have been ploughed flat and are now visible as cropmarks. The remains of tofts and crofts are visible as ditch defined conjoined enclosures around the church. They range in size from 40m by 25m to 110m by 45m and are centred at TF 3565 7971. Within one of the tofts is a possible building visible as a rectangular enclosure, measuring 8m by 5m, defined by low banks or earth covered walls. Probable Medieval field boundaries are visible to the south west of Manor Farm, centred at TF 3537 7925. More boundaries are visible adjacent but these appear to relate to Post Medieval garden features associated with Burwell Hall (see TF 37 NE 27). Some of the earthworks at Burwell could relate to the Benedictine priory (TF 37 NE 1) but in their present form they are almost certainly Medieval settlement remains. (Morph No. LI.85.1.1-7, 2.1)
