The Camp

Hob Uid: 105015
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Eardisley
Grid Ref : SO2872052000
Summary : The earthwork remains of a circular enclosure of unknown date known as The Camp. The site is defined by a single ditch with an outer bank. The enclosed area is circa 40 metres in diameter. It is included by Harding and Lee in their henge gazetteer, although they argue that it is unlikely to be a henge, and suggest a Medieval date, as do other sources.
More information : (SO 28725200) The Camp (NAT) MOAT (NR) (1)

The earthwork called The Camp, consists of a circular enclosure 46 yds in diameter, surrounded by a dry ditch with traces of an outer bank to the southern half. (2-3)

Shown by Rees as a "minor fortification or castle site abandoned by the 14th century". (4)

Air photograph shows it to be truly circular. (5)

The Camp (name confirmed) is a sub-circular enclosure situated above steep slopes on the south and southeast sides. It comprises a ditch with traces of an external bank, 0.4m high on the south and west, enclosing an area 40.0 m in diameter. The ditch is up to 1.0m deep and 10.0m wide but ploughing has reduced it to a berm on the SE side. There is no evidence of an internal bank and whilst the interior is generally raised this is due to the fact that the work occupies a slight knoll. There is a roughly level and slightly raised area close to the SE side but nothing that could be identified as a hut or building platform.

No entrance is apparent: a break on the west side on the line of a drain, is probably recent. It is not shown on the RCHM Ms plan.

The earthwork has been ploughed once in recent years, according to the farmer, but is now under permanent pasture. The purpose and date of the work are uncertain. Published survey (1:2500) revised. (6)

The remains of the sub-circular enclosure known as The Camp described by the previous authorities was seen located at SO 2872 5200. The site was seen as an earthwork and mapped from aerial photographs. (7)
