Monument Number 104903

Hob Uid: 104903
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Dorstone
Grid Ref : SO2805041470
Summary : Motte and bailey probably originating in the 11th century with associated occupation and agricultural remains. These include the earthwork and buried remains of a number of holloways, building platforms and an area of medieval cultivation remains which are to the east. The earthwork remains of the motte were mapped from aerial photographs. The mound is 34 metres north east to south west by 30 metres transversely and is 6 metres high. On the summit of the motte are cemented masonry remains which imply the existence of an angular keep or tower, although the site has been significantly altered during the second half of the twentieth century. There is a fragmentary encircling ditch 8 metres in width and between 0.7 metres and 1.2 metres in depth. Scheduled.
More information : (SO 28054147) MOTTE AND BAILEY (NR). (1)

Tump (see plan) consists of an "oval mound, 34 yds by 32 yds, with a surrounding ditch and a scarped enclosure to the SW. The mound rises some 18 ft above the lowest level of the ditch but the slopes on the NW and SW have been cut into to form a footpath. The ditch has been destroyed on the E side and on the N its place is taken by a berm and a steep natural slope. The enclosure to the SW is flat and has a steep scarp on the S and W and a natural slope on the N". (2)
