Monument Number 1045

Hob Uid: 1045
Location :
Northumberland
Kirknewton
Grid Ref : NT8798022270
Summary : Remains of a native oval scooped enclosure 35m north-south by 45m east-west enclosed by a single earth and rubble bank 6m wide and up to .75m high. The rear of the enclosure is scooped into the hillside to a depth of 3m to create an upper terrace of level ground. Raised platforms bearing the remains of the circular stone foundations of two prehistoric platforms with internal diameters of up to 7m are visible on this terrace.
More information : A scooped settlement enclosure containing two probable hut platforms
and a modern sheep stell. The enclosure is cut by the modern
plantation fence and no traces of the enclosure are visible within
the plantation. The enclosure is a flattened oval with a maximum
overall dimension of 52m. The maximum height of the enclosire bank is
c.1.0m and the scarps of the hut platforms stand to c.0.5m. A
probable entrance in the NE side is c.2.5m wide.

Two rubble banks (not surveyed) to the N and E of the enclosure form
a hollow way leading downhill from the enclosure entrance for at
least 100m. They have a maximum width of 3.6m and stand to a height
of c.0.4m. There is no visible relationship between the enclosure or
the banks and the contour lynchets (see NT 82 SE 13) though a slight
bank along the crest of one of the lynchets may be attached to the N
side of the enclosure. (1)
