Summary : Possible Medieval settlement (tofts, crofts and ridge and furrow) seen as earthworks.
More information : The possible remains of Medieval settlement were visible as
earthworks around the modern village of Newton and these have been
mapped from good quality air photographs. The fragmentary remains
of tofts and crofts were seen as rectilinear ditch defined
enclosures with dimensions of on average 70m by 25m. These are
centred at TF 0451 3621. The surviving blocks of ridge and furrow
of the field system that would once have surrounded the Medieval
settlement at Newton are visible centred TF 0418 3604, TF 0448 3630,
TF 0449 3585, and TF 0494 3593. (Morph No. LI.840.5.1-2)
