Monument Number 1043077

Hob Uid: 1043077
Location :
Lincolnshire
East Lindsey
Maidenwell
Grid Ref : TF3327080240
Summary : A probable Roman settlement consisting of enclosures, hut circles, a track and a double ditched linear feature seen as cropmarks.
More information : A probable Roman-British settlement was seen as cropmarks and has
been mapped from good quality air photographs. The settlement is
situated at 105m OD on a north facing slope just below the crest of a
hill overlooking a dry valley and is centred at TF 3322 8022. The
settlement is visible as a series of large overlapping ditch
defined rectilinear enclosures with smaller conjoined enclosures
ranged along their sides and covers approximately six hectares. At
least four different or overlapping phases could be seen but their
relationship to each other and what length of time their is between
phases is not clear from the cropmark evidence alone. Three
possible hut circles were visible within the settlement. These are
centred at TF 3329 8026, TF 3328 8023 and TF 3319 8017. A possible
fourth hut circle was visible at TF 3321 8031. This was about
twice the size of the others and could represent a different type
of monument. A possible track approaches the settlement from the
north and extends down the western side of the settlement from
TF 3312 8061 to TF 3325 8012. Around the main settlement complex
are the remains of more rectilinear enclosures centred at
TF 3334 8047 and TF 3306 8019 and TF 3303 8026. A double ditched
linear feature at TF 3310 8016 may represent a boundary associated
with the settlement. A ditch defined boundary approaches the
settlement from the east and is centred at TF 3358 8024.
