More information : A large circular cairn, much disturbed, is situated on a natural platform on the crest of the ridge to the S of Hazeltonrig Burn at 300 m OD. It is c 10.0 m in diameter and 1.5 m high. It is composed of roughly stacked stones and is turf-covered except where it has been robbed. To the S a broad, low bank of stones with no turf covering, up to 3 m wide, 10 m long and up to c 0.4 m high, is presumably the result of relatively recent robbing of the cairn, with the stones awaiting re-use. The natural slope to the S has been modified into a scarp 6 m wide and c 2 m high. On the W, N and partly on the E the cairn is surrounded by a stone rickle, possibly the remains of a wall, up to 2.0 m wide and 0.2 m high, well covered by turf and nettles. The ridge-and-furrow stops against this rickle which is like a headland on the N side.
The rig clearly respects the cairn which from its position and character may be a prehistoric monument. (1) |
