Summary : Roman road running from Barmby - Stamford Bridge - Thirsk - Durham. This road extends for 72 miles and can be traced in lines of roads, hedgerows and parish boundaries.
More information : RR 80a Roman Road. Barmby - Stamford Bridge - Thirsk - Durham (72 ml)
Beside the main northern trunk road, Dere Street - RR 8a/b from York, there was also a nearly parallel road only a few miles to the east. This forked from the RR 2e (LINEAR 272) at Barmby Moor proceeding north-west to Stamford Bridge, Thirsk and Durham and eventually Newcastle - See RR 80b. Although the road seems to have been of relatively light construction, showing no trace of embankments, its course is for long distances established by lines of roads, hedgerows and parish boundaries (See LINEARS 281, 282 and 284 for sections of this road) (1)
