Summary : A portion of a Roman altar inscribed D.D.N.N.B. (alli et) Volusian etc was found at Bowness in c.1871 and was built into a cattle shed at Herd Hill. Now lost.
More information : (Centred at NY 212622) Portion of a Roman Altar inscribed D.D.N.N.B. (alli et) Volusian etc found at Bowness and now built into a cattle shed at Herd Hill. ONB states that formerly a shepherds house stood on the top of Herd Hill. (1-2) Part of an altar 14" x 15" found in, or before 1871 built into a cattle-shed at Herd Hill. Now lost. Sought in vain by Collingwood in 1928 and Wright in 1941. Details of inscription. (3)
