Location :
Cumbria

Grid Ref : NY2283062560
Summary : The site of Roman turret 79B, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall along the Cumbrian coast. It survives as a slight earthwork platform. It was excavated in 1934.
More information : [NY2283 6256] Turret 79B [site] (1)

Turret 79B in Jeffrey Croft was excavated in 1934, by the Cumberland Excavation Committee who reported finding the south and west walls of the Turret. The west wall was traced as an independent structure for 15 1/4ft north of the SW corner, after which it had been robbed away. No remains were found of the north and great walls. The construction showed that this had been without doubt a turret in the original turf wall. (2)

Probing revealed twin lines of masonry 7.0 metres apart. Possible ploughed spoil mounds on the surface. (3)

An amorphous swelling at the published position probably represents the site of the turret. (4)

A very slight platform at NY 2283 6256 may indicate the site of the turret. (5)

Scheduled (6)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7)
