Summary : Dominican Friary, founded circa 1239 and dissolved in 1538. The surviving buildings of the cloister, which lay to the South of the church, were later used as company halls and almshouses. After an extensive programme of excavation and restoration, they were restored in 1978-81 and are now used as a restaurant, workshops and tourist information centre. |

NZ 244 642 Blackfriars Dominican Friary. Excavations were carried out on this site between 1963 and 1985. A number of interim reports detail the work done on the site. The full excavation report will be published in a forthcoming edition of `Archaeologia Aelinia'. The finds and site archive have been deposited in the Museum of Antiquities, The University of Newcastle upon Tyne. (5-9)
