A pair of fairly well-preserved bowl barrows, standing some 30 metres apart, located to the north of Barkhale Camp Neolithic causewayed enclosure (SU 91 SE 31). Both barrows were surveyed by RCHME in 1995 along with the causewayed enclosure. The western barrow is 20 metres in diameter and 1.3 metres high; the eastern barrow, just 20 metres from the enclosure, is 23 metres in diameter and 1.5 metres high. Neither appears to have been surrounded by a ditch. Both appear to feature depressions on the top of the mound, presumably resulting from antiquarian excavation, although no records exist. The western barrow was trenched by V Seton-Williams in 1959. The base of a possible round-based vessel was found beneath the mound, but the pottery recovered was generally undiagnostic.

Two turf covered bowl barrows situated upon the crest of the
South Downs.

'A', at SU97561277,is 21.5m in diameter and 1.5m in height.

'B', at SU 97521279, is 19.0m in diameter and 1.0m in height.

Neither show traces of a ditch.

(SU 9752 1279 & 9757 1277) In December 1995, RCHME carried out an analytical earthwork survey of Barkhale Camp (SU 91 SE 31) as part of the project to record Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Period (5). The two bowl barrows which lie within 70m of the Neolithic causewayed enclosure were also surveyed.

Barrow A is 23.0m in diameter and 1.5m high; slight traces of a ditch may result from ploughing, which has truncated the edges of the barrow. The barrow was trenched in 1959 by Seton Williams, but the results remain unpublished: the base of a possible round based vessel was recovered beneath the barrow, but the pottery was generally undiagnostic (5a).
