The Defence of Britain Project ran from April 1995 to March 2002 under the auspices of the Council for British Archaeology. In that time, nearly 20,000 twentieth century military sites in the United Kingdom were recorded by 600 volunteers. The two databases developed by the Project can be searched on-line through the Archaeology Data Service at: http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/resources.html?dob

The project is part of the English contribution to an EU Culture 2000 multiannular project "Landscapes of War" . The aim of the wider Landscapes of War project is to record and disseminate information on heritage of 20th century conflicts, both on land and at sea in the project partner's areas; under the banner of "Remembering Conflict in 20th century Europe". The English Heritage representatives on the project are Dr. John Schofield, Head of Military programmes, and Robin Page, Acting Projects Team leader, Datasets Development. The main component of the English contribution will be to build on the existing NMR datbase records by targeting a body of reports (which are national in scope) in the NMR library and incorporating their findings into AMIE.
